As a Hindu temple, the Swetharanyeswarar Temple is located in Thiruvenkadu, a village in Tamil Nadu’s Mayiladuthurai district dedicated to Shiva. The lingam serves as a symbol of Shiva, who is revered as Swetharanyeswarar. Parvati is represented by Brahmavidyambigai.

Shiva incarnated as Agoramurthi under the tree that is believed to be the location of the Thiruvengadu temple and killed Maruthuvasuran. People pleaded with Shiva to end their suffering. Other names include Swetaranyam, Adi Chidambaram, and Nava Ntirya Stala. Indra, Budha, Surya, Chandra, and Airavata are believed to have worshipped Swetharanyeswarar there.

A seven-tiered gopuram welcomes visitors to the temple complex, which is approximately two acres square. The temple is home to several shrines, the most prominent being Swetharanyesarar’s, Aghora’s, and Nataraja’s. All of the shrines and three temple tanks are surrounded by large, concentric granite walls.
