About Temple

A temple dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, a reclining form of Lord Vishnu, is located in Srirangam, Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, India. As one of the eight Svayam Vyakta Ksetras (“self-manifested shrines”) of Lord Vishnu, it is considered the first and foremost among 108 Divya Desams, Lord Vishnu’s holy abodes.

History

In addition to its architectural splendor, the temple also hosts a 21-day chariot festival during Margazhi (Dec-Jan). The sacred Vaishnavite text Tiruvaimozhi is recited before Lord Ranganatha every day during the festival. This temple, which is the largest non-functioning temple in India, occupies 156 acres (631,000 square meters) with a perimeter of 4,116m (10,710 feet).

One of the largest religious Srirangam temples is often listed as the largest functioning Hindu temple in the world (Angkor Wat is the world’s most complex). Seven concentric walls (called prakarams or mail sugar) surround the temple, with a total length of 32,592 feet or six miles. There are 21 Gopurams which surround these walls.

Sri Rangam celebrates Darshan and festivals throughout the year (about 322 days out of 365). Vaikunta Ekadesi is the most important festival. AdiBrahmotsavam is celebrated with pomp and glory during the Tamil month of Panguni.
