History
The temple facing West Side is a revered location where Thirugana Sambandar, Navukarasar, and Sundarar have all sung devotional songs and hymns. Legend has it that Sri Abirami Devi manifested from the meditation power of Sri Mahavishnu at this very spot. This temple holds significance for sixty-three Nayanmars, particularly Kungilinayanar and Karinayanar who performed Siva Thondu and achieved Moksha (mukthi) here. Depicted in the temple are images of the Lord with a raised forefinger, warning Yama, while the Lingam bears the mark of the kala paasa. With Yama subdued, death ceased to exist on Earth until nature intervened. It was then that Lord Siva, also known as Kala-samhara-moorthi or Amritaghateswarar, restored Yama back to life.
Almost every day dawns with a celebration at the temple, with hundreds of pilgrims thronging to celebrate their 60th or 80th birthdays. The temple offers worship services six times a day. It is very auspicious for the people to celebrate 60th and 80th birthdays (birth stars) called Sathabishekam and Sashti Aptha poori, respectively, as their longevity will increase as a result.
