About Temple

Saraswati temples are rarely found in India. Saraswathi, the Goddess of learning, is rarely worshipped in Indian temples. Although she often collaborates with other deities in most other temples, she has very few shrines dedicated to herself. There is a temple dedicated to Saraswathi called Koothanur located in the Mayiladuthurai-Tiruvarur rail route, one and a half kilometers from Poonthottam.

History

On the flip side, despite a previous disagreement with Brahma, Saraswathi was reborn on earth. Seeking redemption, they both worshiped Lord Shiva and were granted liberation. While Saraswathi’s essence became intertwined with the river Harisol and was honored as the Goddess of knowledge with a shrine on its banks, Brahma faced a different fate due to a previous curse. With persistent prayers, Lord Shiva granted them the ability to perform rituals for departed souls. As a result, Brahma Pooja holds great significance when conducted in this manner.

Yamuna is believed to have been tempted by Krishna’s acts with the gopikas. Cursed, she prayed for emancipation and appeared as a river.

There have been four kumbhabhishekans in this temple, including those conducted in 1941, 1968, 1987, and 2003. Great people like Ottakoothar, Ovathakoothar, and Purushotham Bharathi have worshipped here. A blessing from the Shankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Mutt is being bestowed on the temple authorities.

An example of a rare temple can be found in Kuthanoor, Tamil Nadu. It is the only temple dedicated to Saraswati Devi in India. It is located near the town of Karikal.
