History

In legend, the Pandavas visited this village called Aivar Padi, where they kept their weapons under a tree, worshipped Sri Maha Prathyangira Devi, and wandered through the forests. It is believed that the place was originally called Aivar Padi, which later became Ayyavadi because the five Pandavas worshipped here.

During the time when Lord Vishnu took the Narasimha Avatar to kill the demon king Hiranyakasipu, the father of Prahalada, Narasimha’s anger and fierceness didn’t subside after he was so furiously fought with so much power to destroy the demon king. Because of his hyper, Narasimha couldn’t tell the difference between good and bad people and started disturbing everyone. People prayed to Lord Shiva for protection.

The Avatar of Lord Shiva, Sarabeswara, had the appearance of a lion and the wings of an eagle. Lord Shiva was accompanied by Shakthi in the form of Sri Mahaprathyangira Devi seated on one of Sri Sarabeswara’s wings. In order to restore peace, Sarabeswarar subsided Narasimha’s anger. Accordingly, Sri Mahaprathyangira Devi and Sri Sarabeswara are considered more powerful than any other.

In this temple, Homams are held every Full and No Moon Day, after which huge volumes of Red Chillies are offered to the Goddess. Sri Maha Prathyangira Devi is an important Goddess in Shakthi worship.
