About Temple:
In the breezy area of Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai, adjacent to the beach of the Bay of Bengal, the legendary Marundeeswarar Temple is located. It is one of the great Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu. This magnificent temple was built for Lord Shiva in his incarnation of Lord Marundeeswarar. It is the biggest temple in Thiruvanmiyur.
History
Valmiki Nagar is a place in Thiruvanmiyur that bears his name. A temple to Sage Valmiki was also built in the middle of the East Coast Road, which is very close to the Marundeeswarar temple. It was surprising that the builders of the ECR (East Coast Road) had even considered demolition of the temple of Sage Valmiki to complete the project. After that, the high court of Tamil Nadu ordered that the temple remain in its original location.
It is here that Lord Hanuman performed pooja, the lingam (meenakshisundareswarar) for which Lord Indra cured the curse, and the lingam for which Saint Bharadwaja performed pooja. Lord Brahma is believed to have conducted a festival here for Lord Shiva; Markandeyar prayed here to Lord Shiva and performed penance.
