In Kanchipuram, Tamilnadu, India, the Varadharaja Perumal Temple, also known as Hastagiri or Attiyuran, is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
History
This is an ancient temple constructed by the Cholas in 1053, considered one of the 108 divyadesams or holy abodes of Vishnu. Situated in Vishnu Kanchi, a section of Kanchipuram known for its many renowned Vishnu temples, it was once home to the esteemed Hindu scholar Ramanujacharya. The temple complex covers 23 acres and is celebrated for its sanctity and rich history. Adding to its significance are intricately crafted gold-plated lizards adorning the sanctum. Originally built in 1053, it underwent expansions during the reigns of Chola kings Kulottunga Chola I and Vikrama Chola. In the 14th century, later Chola rulers added a second wall and gopura. A spacious Prakaram encircles the temple, with a grandly carved tower standing tall. This is also one of the 108 Divya Desams, housing Lord Varadharaja Swamy on the upper prakaram and a shrine below for Lord Narasimha. Perundevi Thayaar has her own separate place of worship as well as Sudarshana Azhwar’s Shrine situated near the temple tank.
