In ancient India, Vishvamitra, also known as Kaushika or “descendant of Kusha,” was a renowned king. He was the grandson of great king Kusha and a courageous warrior. His story is recounted in Bala Kanda’s prose 51 of the Valmiki Ramayana. The powerful and righteous Kushanabha, son of Prajapati, was King Kusha’s descendant. Gaadhi, widely known as a person of note, was the son of Kushanabha and father to Vishvamitra, a revered saint with great splendor. For many thousands of years, Vishvamitra ruled the kingdom with tremendous might and wisdom. Although his story is also told in various Puranas, there are variations from the Ramayana account. The Mahabharata’s Vishnu Purana and Harivamsha chapter 27 describe the birth of Vishvamitra.
